DEAR READER, YOURS TRULY

Growing up in New Hampshire and Connecticut, I always loved to read, including favorites like The Secret Garden and Charlotte’s Web.  After majoring in American Literature at Dartmouth College, I joined the ground crew at Fenway Park, after which I embarked on a two-year journey through the Middle East and Central Africa.  Among many adventures, I worked in Rwanda observing the mountain gorillas.  My travels led to the American Film Institute in Los Angeles and a career in dramatic writing.

Among many screenplays, I co-wrote the feature HOMECOMING, based on the acclaimed young adult novel by Cynthia Voigt.  The script garnered a Writers Guild nomination for Best Long Form Adaptation.  The film, starring Anne Bancroft, received the Gold Award at the Houston International Film Film Festival.  I also co-wrote BEAST OF BATAAN, a Word War II war crimes drama for producers Mel Brooks and Jonathan Sanger.

The most recent project is my full length Helen Keller play "Little Island of Joy".  The play won 3rd Prize at the 2016 Beverly Hills Theatre Guild-Julie Harris Award Competition, and was a semi-finalist at the 2016 Eugene O’Neill Playwrights Conference.  For television, I’ve written a pilot script “Wynken Blynken and Nod” with author Fran Dorf, adapting her book Saving Elijah for an eight-hour limited series.

In addition to writing drama, I’ve also written numerous documentary scripts, including segments for the History Channel shows “Secret History of the CIA,” “The Color of War,” and segments for the CNBC program “Self-Made in California.”

Puddeljumpers was my first novel, a fantasy adventure published by Disney’s Hyperion Books for Children.  Although targeted for younger readers, the book can be enjoyed by anyone who enjoys exploring uncharted worlds.

On occasion I do free-lance editing for other writers, specializing in screenplays, book narratives (fiction and non-fiction), and magazine articles. This spring and summer I consulted on the screenplay for the independent feature SILENT VOICE, scheduled to shoot later this year in New Orleans, and worked as a story consultant on two Hallmark movies.

These days I share time between Los Angeles and New England.  You can contact me at cccarl@mac.com
